  • What are the causes and effects of these pollutants on our waters?
  • What can we, as a community, do about non-point source pollution?

To learn the answers to these questions and more information about Indiana Clean Water Act public involvement and outreach, come to a community “water awareness” meeting.

WHEN:                        Wednesday, January 28, 2004, 9 a.m.

WHERE:         4-H Center

SPONSOR:    WAVE (Water Awareness for the

Vanderburgh Environment)

Susan Schultz, ProjectWET Coordinator with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, will be on hand to give some insight into the state’s efforts to reach out and get the public involved in water awareness.

This invitation is being sent to neighborhood associations, schools, colleges and universities, city and county departments, scout associations, homeowners association, and other people and groups who get involved in community endeavors.

Many of this organization possess various types of resources that can be combined to form a community-wide effort to create public awareness about clean streams and lakes in Evansville and Vanderburgh County. Bring a list of your resources to this event and share them with WAVE. A master list can be compiled that will be available to all interested in helping our water environment.

If you know of any other persons or groups who would like to attend, invite them. Please RSVP by January 23, 2002.

New group promotes water awareness

By MARK WILSON Courier & Press staff writer 464-7417 or mwilson@evansville.net
January 27, 2004

Water pollution may bring to mind images of chemical spills, industrial waste and overflowing sewers, but it is not always that simple.

Storm water runoff from rain and melting snow and ice carries with it a variety of pollutants from parking lots, streets, yards, and farm fields into ditches, creeks and lakes. This pollution can include fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, antifreeze, gasoline, oil, and other contaminants and typically cannot be traced to a particular source.

"They are testing water in streams and lakes and finding that the water is contaminated. Eventually, this water can run to the (Ohio) river," said Brenda Jeffers, education and public outreach coordinator for the Vanderburgh County Surveyor's Office.

Creating awareness about and preventing such "nonpoint source pollution" will be the focus of a new organization being put together as a joint effort of the Vanderburgh County's Surveyor's Office, Soil & Water Conservation District and the Westside Improvement Association.

Holly McCutchan, a volunteer with the Soil & Water Conservation District, said the hope is that the new group - Water Awareness for the Vanderburgh Environment (WAVE) - will be an umbrella group of neighborhood associations, schools, colleges and universities, city and county departments and others. Many of these organizations, she said, have resources, which can be combined to form a communitywide effort to create public awareness about clean streams and lakes. The public is invited, weather permitting, to a meeting at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Vanderburgh County 4-H Center.

Susan Schultz of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources will be on hand to discuss the state's effort to raise awareness of water pollution issues.

"We are hoping that this will be a communitywide effort," Jeffers said. "As we try to initiate this endeavor, we are going to be learning right along with those who are joining us."

The Surveyor's Office has created a Web site at www.riverfriendly.com, which is aimed at helping everybody from educators to builders learn more about the issue.
