MINUTES
WAVE MEETING
Water Awareness
for the Vanderburgh Environment
September 29, 2004
WAVE met September 29, 2004, 3:30 p.m., at the Soil and Water Conservation District Conference Room. Jerry Carter, Tommy Donahue, Norma Duckworth, Brenda Jeffers, Holly McCutchan, Fred Padget, Pam Pelaski, Trena Roedel, and Mike Wathen were present.
The minutes of the July 7, 2004 meeting were approved on a motion by Holly McCutchan and a second by Pam Pelaski.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Operations Manual. Brenda Jeffers is conducting research for development of an operations manual that coincides with WAVE’s constitution and bylaws. Brenda is using the Virginia Water Environment Association’s manual as a model.
Watershed Databases. Since the watershed databases that have been assembled to date are not relational, no baseline characterization project is feasible. Although, the group did discuss possibly storing all this data in a central location.
Committee Update. Margaret Russell is unable to chair the Education Committee. Brenda Jeffers stated that Monica Freeman was attending a grant writing class the day of the meeting, and Monica will report about this class at the next meeting. Brenda Jeffers requested her name be added to the Public Relations Committee. Tommy Donahue expressed his desire to participate on the Membership Committee.
NEW BUSINESS
Community Projects. Tommy
Donahue suggested WAVE join with the Greenway and Canoe Evansville to help with
the National Trails Day, which will be held in June 2005.
Jerry Carter brought a “Bike and Hike the Calumet” brochure from the Southeast
Environmental Task Force in
Public Relations Committee. Brenda Jeffers suggested that the Public Relations Committee make a list of civic and community agencies to contact for support and involvement; and furthermore, put together a list of items to put in a brochure. Brenda asked that the committee to meet before the next meeting so it could give a progress report.
Education Committee. Brenda Jeffers talked with the Education Committee about starting to plan an outreach program that would bring water quality awareness to the community. Brenda suggested putting together (within the next year) a program that could be delivered to the neighborhood associations. Fred Padget suggested that Paul Farmer, President of the United Neighborhoods of Evansville (UNOE), would be a good contact person to help with this kind of program. Tommy Donahue thought that WAVE might want to survey the neighborhood groups to find out what water quality awareness issues are important to them.
Pam Pelaski talked about informing area teachers about Project Wet. Pam suggested possibly contacting the principals of the schools to set up meetings with teachers. Pam also mentioned that WAVE representatives could meet with teachers according to the grade level or subject(s) they teach.
Brenda Jeffers asked that the Education Committee meet and have progress report ready to present at the next meeting.
